I stop the car to view Piha,
spread gloriously before me.
Take a deep breath,
such excitement in my heart.
Fear dares to derail me
for a moment
when I remember why I am here,
but I soothe it with words
of quiet certainty,
It will be okay. Let’s play.
Does everyone pause
Before entering the kingdom
of Piha?
Where sea and sky kiss
the horizon.
Where smooth black sands
sparkle with gems,
and teasing waves play
cat and mouse at the foot
of Lion Rock?
I think they must.
Here I stand, unveiling myself
laying down my bones.
While Piha, dressed in her
magnificent cloak,
welcomes me home.
“Oh, it’s you my old friend.
Back for another intimate
conversation.
You know you are safe with me.”
And the wildness of this place,
Unleashes the longing in my soul.
To speak my truth.
For I am known here.
And that is all I can ever hope for.
And that is more than enough.

Coming Home, was inspired by my second visit to Piha, having been invited to share my poetry at the first Writing Weekend for 2019.
Sue Monk Kidd, says in When the heart waits, “The image of coming home is a powerful archetypal symbol for returning to one’s deepest self. To the soul, coming home is to return to the place of inner origin, the original imprint of God within. Therefore, coming home fills us with a sense of being in the right place. A sense of deep spiritual belonging.” My poem speaks for itself. I am known here. And that is all I can ever hope for. And that is more than enough.
